Salem Drive – Schaumburg Road to Parker Drive

Village of Schaumburg

OBJECTIVE

There is a safety concern within the reverse curve between Parker Drive and Roxbury Lane. Vehicles often veer off the roadway, primarily in the northbound direction, and collide with properties along the curve. Possible solutions include methods to slow traffic, such as chevrons, lowering the speed limit, implementing transverse pavement markings, and restricting parking.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This federally eligible Phase I roadway reconstruction project commenced with the evaluation of cross-section alternatives to determine the most feasible solution for addressing the needs of residents, roadway users, and the Village. The existing bike lanes on Salem Drive also function as parking lanes throughout the project limits. HLR's task was to determine the best option for separating the two roadway users without widening the pavement and impacting the many mature trees within the corridor.

The scope of work includes topographic surveying, sewer televising, traffic and crash analyses, drainage design, preparation of several geometric alternatives analyses to determine the optimal lane geometry compared to existing conditions, Project Development Report, wetland screening, tree survey, Preliminary Environmental Site Assessment, and a public meeting. The project was processed as a State-Approved Categorical Exclusion.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Separation of the parking and bike lanes
  • Reconstruction of Salem Drive pavement
  • Addition of off-street multi-use path
  • Improve safety of the reverse between Parker Drive and Roxbury Lane
  • All-way stop at Parker Drive to correct sight distance concerns
