Multi-Intersection Pedestrian Signal Upgrades

Village of Schaumburg

OBJECTIVE

Increasing mobility and safety for pedestrians is a major issue on street systems, particularly in light of increased federal focus on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Village of Schaumburg had two intersections which posed a risk for pedestrians due to inadequate accessibility and pedestrian crossing signals. The solution was ADA-compliant ramps and signals at each crossing.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

HLR provided plans for pedestrian signals on all four legs of the two intersections (Schaumburg Road and Wildflower Lane and Barrington Road and Wethersfield Way/Bourbon Parkway). The improvement plans included countdown pedestrian signals on all four crossings and installation of new sidewalks and detectable warnings to meet current standards. HLR’s plans also included the addition of Emergency Vehicle Preemption equipment to the existing traffic signals. The project was permitted through the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Increasing mobility and safety for pedestrians, with a focus on ADA compliance
  • Identification of two intersections in the Village of Schaumburg as high-risk areas for pedestrians
  • Implementation of ADA-compliant ramps and pedestrian crossing signals at each intersection
