IL Route 13 ITS Study

Southern Illinois Metropolitan Planning Organization (SIMPO)

OBJECTIVE

The Southern Illinois Metro Planning Organization (SIMPO) was planning to conduct a study of their existing traffic signal and communications equipment at 36 locations. The objective of the study was to determine the necessary equipment upgrades.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) conducted a planning study for the Southern Illinois Metro Planning Organization (SIMPO) to evaluate 36 signalized intersections located between IL 13/127 in Murphysboro and Fair Street in Marion. HLR's traffic engineers conducted an inventory of the existing traffic signal and communications equipment at each of the 36 locations and determined the necessary equipment upgrades. Additionally, we researched national best practices for Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM), which represents a newer approach to improving traffic operations and safety. Based on our findings, we provided recommendations for implementing an appropriate ATSPM system for this region.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Identified traffic signal and communications equipment improvements
  • Provided recommendations to implement an appropriate ATSPM system for the region
