Streamwood Wetland Management

Village of Streamwood

OBJECTIVE

The Village of Streamwood needed maintenance for 21 natural areas located throughout the community. With the goal of controlling invasive species, HLR developed a management plan to suit the needs of each individual site.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) developed and has been implementing a management and maintenance plan for 27 sites within the Village of Streamwood.  The most effective treatment, based on ecological and economic factors, was implemented based off the individuals site needs.  The plan included invasive species removal using both mechanical and chemical techniques.  The species focused on through most of the sites were garlic mustard, purple loosestrife, thistles, teasel, cattails, reed canary and common reed.

Additional management techniques used at the park include a prescribed burn to enhance native character and stimulate native grass growth.

The following management activities are being utilized:

  • Chemical removal of invasive species via herbiciding by an Illinois licensed pesticide applicator
  • Mechanical removal of invasive species via machine and hand pulling
  • Prescribed burn with applicable Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Permitting

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

HLR designed and is executing a management plan for invasive species removal through a variety of mechanical and chemical removal techniques, including prescribed burning.

Benefits of the project include:

  • Invasive removal promoting native plant growth
  • Improved wildlife habitat
  • Improved aesthetics
