Manito Road Bridge (CH-16) over the Mackinaw River

Tazewell County Highway Department

OBJECTIVE

Age and scour had taken its toll on this nine-span highway bridge over the Mackinaw River. It was deemed structurally-deficient and functionally-obsolete. Tazewell County needed a cost-effective solution to replace this bridge.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Our structural engineers designed a new six-span composite steel plate girder bridge to replace the deficient existing structure.  The new bridge is 39.17’ wide and 736’ long with a 150’ main span over the Mackinaw River.  Over 900’ of the roadway approaches were also improved as part of the project.  Roadway improvements included wider shoulders, improved side-slopes, and up-to-date guardrail.

HLR was also responsible for all cost estimates and paperwork necessary for the Tazewell County Highway Department to receive approval to use IDOT Local Roads Major Bridge Funds to construct the project. The new design ensured that the bridge met current load requirements and clearances and eliminated scour and fracture critical problems.
