Lucinda Avenue – Annie Glidden Road to Kishwaukee Drive

City of DeKalb

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the suitability of a roundabout at Lucinda and Normal and design it to ensure it stays within the existing intersection right of way. Northern Illinois University’s Disability Resource Center is located at this intersection, so the roundabout was enhanced to provide additional accommodations, ensuring that all users could safely navigate the pedestrian crossings.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project scope includes roadway reconstruction for a roundabout at Lucinda’s intersection with Normal Avenue and resurfacing along the remainder of the project. Project work involves topographic survey, completing the environmental survey request, coordination of the geometric design, review of bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, crash analysis, and preparation of a Project Development Report.

ADA/PROWAG improvements, including multiple mid-block crossings, were incorporated into the project. A rapid rectangular flashing beacon (RRFB) was installed on the east leg of the roundabout to provide a protected crossing between the bus stop and Northern Illinois University’s Disability Resource Center. Extensive coordination with Northern Illinois University was necessary, given that the project is located within the school campus. A Public Meeting was conducted to disseminate information to the public about the improvements.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Provides a single-lane roundabout with minimal right-of-way impacts
  • Enhances accommodations for disabled pedestrians to safely navigate the roundabout
  • Consolidates mid-block crossings throughout the corridor to decrease the number of conflict points between drivers and pedestrians
