Gilmer Road over Fairfield Road Parapet Repairs

Lake County Division of Transportation

OBJECTIVE

The Lake County Division of Transportation was concerned with spalled concrete falling from the bridge parapets onto the roadway below. The County contracted with Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) to provide both bridge inspection and design engineering services.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The bridge in question is a single-span plate girder supported by rusticated concrete faced drilled shaft abutments, constructed in 2008. The structure has a bike path on the south side and has variations of the Texas Classic Rail on the north and south exteriors as well as standard concrete parapets on the inside face adjacent to the roadway. An inspection was performed on the parapets and substructure to establish the types of deterioration that had taken place and the extents to which they had impacted the concrete railings, parapets, and abutments.

Working with the County, IDOT, and industry, HLR provided plans and specifications for the repair of the parapets and substructure. Along with the concrete and joint repairs, we provided provisions for a special crack filler and protective coat to better preserve and protect the concrete surfaces. The final product provided improved aesthetics with likelihood for greater use in the County’s preventive maintenance program in the future.
