Dunstan and Sunset Water Main and Storm Sewer Improvements

OBJECTIVE

The City of Geneva was looking to provide a better stormwater conveyance system to address continued and persistent flooding within this older neighborhood caused by undersized storm sewers and unserved areas, all while minimizing disturbance to the residents.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The City contracted with Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR) for design and construction engineering services for this storm sewer improvement project. One storm sewer line was to assist residents in draining a backyard area that was prone to flooding. The other was to replace an existing storm sewer with a larger diameter in order to provide better conveyance to the neighborhood.

The project included preparing plans and specifications for upsizing and relocating the neighborhood’s 3,300 feet of water main. The existing water main and service lines were located in the rear yards of residences along Dunstan Road and Sunset Road. The existing line was to be abandoned and relocated under the pavement within the existing City right-of-way. Special coordination was completed with the City and residents to determine houses that could be replumbed to provide a water service at the front of the building and which residences required the continued use of the rear service connection. HLR worked closely with the residents to provide timely information about design timetable, schedule, and construction updates.

Construction was completed in 2018. HLR was able to construct this project while maintaining electrical, water, and sanitary services throughout the directional drilling process while reducing impacts to landscaping and other neighborhood amenities.
