Coombs Road over Canadian Pacific Railroad

Elgin Township Road District

OBJECTIVE

The existing Coombs Road bridge, a three-span structure with precast prestressed concrete deck beams, was structurally deficient. As a result, temporary shoring was installed below, and load limits were imposed. Additionally, the clearance for the railroad below did not meet current standards. To ensure the safety of the motoring public and comply with current railroad standards, the bridge needed to be replaced. Furthermore, the adjacent roadway was scheduled for reconstruction, and guardrails were installed to enhance traffic safety.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

HLR provided Phase III construction observation and resident engineering services, which included the removal of the existing bridge deck and abutments, driving steel H-piles, constructing new abutments and concrete superstructure, installing new guardrails, and reconstructing the roadway. The existing piers were incorporated into the new construction.

Due to the removal of the existing bridge, through-traffic was detoured around the project, and coordination with local businesses and residents was imperative.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • New bridge abutments and deck
  • Improved clearances for the railroad
  • Better site-lines for traffic and area businesses/residents
  • Guardrails to improve traffic safety
